Delivery Activity and the Conditional Association Between Online Sales Share and Store Profit in Traditional Markets
This study examines whether the association between online sales share and store profit varies with delivery activity in traditional markets. Data from the 2023 Survey of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts and the corresponding Store Management Survey yielded 40,418 stores nested within 1,884 markets. Random-intercept multilevel models showed a positive association between online sales share and self-reported average daily net profit, while the main effect of delivery activity was not significant. The interaction was significantly negative in the full sample, indicating that the positive association weakened as delivery activity increased. It remained negative but insignificant in basic restricted-sample models, whereas refined analyses using an inverse hyperbolic sine transformation and a within-between decomposition showed the same negative pattern. However, the result was not robust to outlier exclusion, market fixed-effects estimation, or generalized estimating equations. The findings should therefore be interpreted as model-sensitive exploratory associations rather than causal effects.
