This study examines how North Korean defector women use cosmetic surgery to negotiate social belonging and aesthetic citizenship in South Korea. Drawing on interviews with twelve North Korean defector women and one plastic surgeon, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three themes were identified: erasing visible traces of hardship, seeking softness and approachability, and demonstrating self-management. Participants used cosmetic surgery not merely to enhance appearance but to reduce visible traces of a stigmatized past, align with social norms, and present themselves as disciplined and competent social actors. The findings suggest that cosmetic surgery works as a form of social mediation, helping participants negotiate the gap between formal citizenship and lived belonging. Through the lens of aesthetic citizenship, this study shows how citizenship is shaped not only by legal status but also by everyday processes of social recognition.
