Perception Types and Meaning Structures of Coaching Supervision among Supervisee Coaches
This study explors the subjective perception types and underlying meaning structures of coaching supervision among supervisee coaches using Q methodology. A Q-population of 332 statements from literature reviews, open-ended surveys, and focus group interviews yielded a final Q-sample of 56 statements. The P-sample comprised 27 supervisee coaches with supervision experience (at least 6 months and 6 cumulative sessions). Data collected via an 11-point forced distribution method were analyzed using principal component analysis and varimax rotation in Ken-Q Analysis. Four perception types emerged: Reflection-Based Self-Expansion with Procedural Burden Awareness, Practice-Oriented Type Sensitive to Relational Distance, Defensive Answer-Seeking Type Driven by Evaluation Threat, and Safety-Oriented Case Clarification and Limit-Accepting Type. Findings reveal that coaching supervision is not experienced uniformly but is interpreted through distinct meaning structures related to reflection, relationships, evaluation, and professional development. This study expands the understanding of coaching supervision from the supervisee perspective, highlighting the need for supervision approaches tailored to supervisees’ subjective perception structures.
