본 연구는 허베이 스피리트호 원유 유출 사건에서 나타난 국민적 자원 봉사 현상을 에리히 프롬의 이론을 중심으로 정신분석적으로 분석하여, 사회재난 상황에서 개인 심리적 지향성이 사회적 현상으로 연결되는 과 정을 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 이론적용적 질적연구로서, 2007년부터 2017 년까지의 언론 인터뷰 및 자원봉사 아카이브에서 총 29건의 자원봉사자 발언을 수집하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회재난 상황에서 나타나는 자원봉사는 연민, 공감, 죄책감, 불안, 연대감, 책임감, 성취감, 사랑 등의 다양한 정서를 담고 있는 삶에 대한 사랑이라는 개인 심리적 지향성이 행동으로 실천된 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 둘째, 사회재난 상황 에서 나타나는 자원봉사의 개인 심리적 지향성이 집단적 자원봉사라는 사회적 현상으로 전환되는 과정은 개인 심리적 지향성이 매체를 통해 타 자와 감정적 상호작용을 하고 사회적 성격에 의해 집단적 수렴, 연대 에 너지로 승화되어 공동체 형성으로 연결됨으로써 결과적으로 개인의 삶 전체뿐 아니라 세대를 넘는 결속으로의 확장으로 이루어졌다. 이러한 집 단적 결속은 일회적 행동을 넘어 사회 전체의 회복탄력성을 구성하는 중 요한 심리적 기반으로 작용하였다. 본 연구는 이를 통해 정신분석이 개 인 심리의 이해를 넘어 사회적 심리 역동을 이해하는 해석 틀로 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다.

This study conducted a psychoanalytic analysis of the nationwide volunteering phenomenon that emerged in the wake of the Hebei Spirit oil spill, drawing on Erich Fromm's theory to examine how individual psychological orientations translate into social phenomena in social disaster contexts. As a theory-applied qualitative study, this research analyzed 29 volunteer statements collected from media interviews and volunteer archives spanning 2007 to 2017. The findings show that volunteering in social disasters can be interpreted as the enactment of the love of life (biophilia)—an individual psychological orientation encompassing emotions such as compassion, empathy, guilt, solidarity, and responsibility—which, through emotional interaction via the media and collective convergence by the social character, was sublimated into the energy of solidarity and community formation, extending into bonds transcending generations and constituting a psychological foundation for societal resilience. These findings suggest that psychoanalysis can serve as an interpretive framework for understanding not only individual psychology but also social psychological dynamics.
