Question-Based Museum Interpretation in Korea : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Docent Manuals and the Reconstruction of a Korean Exhibition Framework
This study analyzes seven western docent handbooks using critical discourse analysis and proposes an interpretation framework tailored to Korean museums. The analysis shows that western models promote a constructivist, visitor-led approach, yet this also functions as a power mechanism to control dialogue. This approach clashes with Korean realities, such as high information demands and the contradiction of requiring high professionalism from unpaid volunteers. To solve this, the study introduces a three-stage framework (Observation-Dialogue- Contextualization) that places information as a supportive resource after visitors speak. This model holds academic value by relying on institutional support, such as interpretation autonomy, rather than individual docent capability.
