Commemoration and Collective Memory of Political Leaders : A Comparative Historical Analysis of Masaryk, Beneš and Syngman Rhee
This study examines the commemoration and collective memory of state-building political leaders in the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea from a comparative historical perspective. The experiences of the World Wars and the Cold War fueled enduring conflicts over the remembrance of founding leaders and the construction of national identity. In the Czech Republic, Tomáš G. Masaryk is commemorated as a symbol of democracy and national independence despite criticisms of his extraconstitutional leadership and limitations in addressing the Slovak question. Similarly, Edvard Beneš, despite his controversial political decisions during and after World War II, is remembered as a defender of democracy and national survival. In contrast, the collective memory of Syngman Rhee remains deeply polarized, making it difficult to establish shared historical consensus. The Czech case demonstrates that political leaders can be remembered as figures who are both open to critical evaluation and worthy of public commemoration.
