The Impact of Trade-Structure Alignment on China’s Exports : An HS-Based Empirical Analysis with a Focus on South Korea
This study examines how the alignment between China’s export structure and its trading partners’ import-demand structure is associated with China’s bilateral exports. Using an unbalanced HS 2-digit panel covering China’s major trading partners from 2000 to 2023, it constructs a Bray-Curtis-based alignment index from HS6 product compositions and estimates PPML models with high-dimensional fixed effects. The results show that stronger trade-structure alignment is positively associated with China’s HS2-level exports, while tariffs are negatively associated with exports. The relationship remains positive for both RCEP members and non-members, and the South Korea subsample suggests that structural alignment may be particularly relevant in China-Korea trade. This study contributes to the literature by providing product-level evidence on the link between trade-structure alignment and China’s export performance.
