An Oral Life History Study of a North Korean Military Laborer Dispatched to Russia : The Meaning and Reconstruction of Life through Experiences of Military Service, Overseas Labor, Defection, and Settlement in South Korea
This study aims to examine the life of a North Korean military laborer dispatched overseas from an insider’s perspective and to reconstruct the meaning of his experiences. To this end, data were collected through a biographical narrative interview based on Schütze’s methodology with a North Korean defector who had worked at construction sites in Russia and were analyzed focusing on process structures of the life course. Overall, the narrator’s life unfolded as a transition from a “controlled life” to a “life moving toward new possibilities.” This study contributes to the literature on North Korean defectors by demonstrating that the experiences of North Korean overseas laborers should be understood not as isolated events but as part of a life trajectory connecting North Korea, overseas labor deployment, defection, and settlement in South Korea, while also illuminating changes in biographical tasks and identity formation.
