본 논문은 현대 아시아 전역에서 배타적이고 국가 주도적인 형태로 급부상하고 있는 민족주의 현상을 ‘세계기독교(World Christianity)’ 의 핵심 특징인 ‘글로컬리티(Glocality)’ 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 바탕 으로 21세기 아시아 선교의 올바른 복음전도 방향성을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 세계기독교의 도래와 함께 서구 제국주의 및 식민 지배에 대한 반동으로 발흥한 민족주의는 아시아 등 남반구에서 토착화된 ‘독립교단(Independents)’의 비약적 성장을 이끌어냈다. 이러한 기독 교와 민족주의의 결합은 복음의 문화적 토착화와 자립적 리더십을 형성하는 긍정적인 환경을 제공하기도 했지만, 동시에 배타주의적 우상숭배로 전락할 위험을 지닌 ‘양날의 검’으로 작용한다. 현재 인도의 힌두트바, 중국의 종교 중국화, 미얀마의 불교 민족주의 등은 복음전도 에 치명적인 억압 기제로 작용하고 있으며, 한국 교회의 경우 극우적 문화전쟁으로 변질되는 현상마저 보이고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 제국 주의적 크리스텐덤 선교 방식에서 벗어난 ‘인격적 전도’, 국가와 민족을 절대화하지 않는 ‘윤리적 애국주의’, 그리고 억압받는 타자와 연대하는 ‘우정과 동행의 선교’를 아시아 복음전도의 핵심 과제로 제안한다.

This study examines the rise of exclusive and state-driven nationalism across contemporary Asia from the perspective of glocality, a key feature of World Christianity. It argues that nationalism, emerging partly as a reaction against Western imperialism and colonial domination, contributed to the growth of indigenous Independent churches in Asia and the Global South. At the same time, the relationship between Christianity and nationalism remains a double-edged sword: it can foster cultural indigenization and local leadership, but it can also degenerate into exclusionary idolatry. Cases such as Hindutva in India, the sinicization of religion in China, and Buddhist nationalism in Myanmar show how religious nationalism can function as a powerful mechanism of oppression against Christian evangelism. This study therefore proposes three central tasks for evangelism in Asia: personal and relational witness beyond imperial Christendom models, ethical patriotism that refuses to absolutize the nation, and a mission of friendship and accompaniment in solidarity with the oppressed.
