A Historical Study of Kim Sun-tae’s Disability Theology and Mission-Welfare Praxis
This article examines the disability theology and mission-welfare praxis of Kim Sun-tae (1941– ), a visually impaired Korean pastor. Reconstructing the founding of the Korean Blind United Church (1972), the General Assembly's blind mission (1976), Siloam Eye Hospital (1985), its transformation into a social-welfare corporation (1997), and the expansion of medical mission (1987–2026), the article argues that Kim's six-decade ministry compresses Korean disability mission's shift from charity through rehabilitation to an integrated “mission-welfare” paradigm, with Kim himself as its architect. His 1992 “theology of being” anticipated the turn marked by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) and the WCC's The Gift of Being (2016), a claim this article also weighs critically.
