A Comparative Study on Missional Discipleship in Contemporary Mission Movements
This paper comparatively analyzes missional discipleship in the two dominant streams of contemporary mission. The Ecumenical camp's “transforming discipleship” risks reducing discipleship to social activism at the expense of inner spiritual formation. The Evangelical camp's “radical discipleship” suffers a Korean translation problem. It fails to convey the intended sense of “fundamental”. Both streams struggle to sustain the theological dualities- becoming a disciple and making disciples- that genuine missional discipleship requires. This paper proposes theosis (deification) as a revitalizing resource for Ecumenical discipleship, and digital mission platforms as a framework for integrating witness and disciple-making within the Evangelical tradition.
