Performance Analysis of Skywave Mitigation in R-Mode under Real Signal Environment
Medium-frequency R-Mode signals are propagated through both ground waves traveling along the Earth’s surface and skywaves reflected by the ionosphere. During daytime, the received field strength is predominantly governed by ground-wave propagation. At night, however, reduced ionospheric electron density leads to decreased absorption, resulting in increased received field strength and extended propagation of skywaves over longer distances. R-Mode is a terrestrial positioning technology that estimates range and determines position by utilizing existing maritime radio infrastructures, such as Differential Global Navigation Satellite Systems (DGNSS). However, skywaves arrive later than ground waves due to ionospheric reflection, introducing excess propagation delay. As the propagation distance increases, this effect degrades signal quality and reduces positioning accuracy. In this study, a method for mitigating skywave effects is investigated by distinguishing between ground-wave and skywave components of R-Mode signals. In particular, the feasibility of suppressing skywave interference using a ground plate is examined. Furthermore, the variability of the reception area, which may arise from signal instability, is analyzed and reduced to provide a more stable service coverage.
