Development of a Predictive Method and Analysis of Design Parameter Effects for Enhancing the Hydrodynamic Performance of Rotor Sails
This paper presents an analysis of the quantitative influence of key design variables - spin ratio (SR), diameter (D), and height (H) - to support optimal rotor sail designs in light of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) carbon neutrality objectives and the tightening of Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regulations. It also presents a methodology for predicting thrust and optimal dimensions. Analysis of 72 cases using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) revealed that as SR increased from 2 to 4, the drag coefficient expanded from approximately 1.0 times 10-3 to over 2.6 times 10-3. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the lift coefficient at SR = 4 increased by approximately 3.7 times compared to the SR = 2 condition. As a result, the generated thrust improved substantially from approximately 32 kN at SR = 2 to over 39 kN at SR = 4. Based on the established quantitative database, a bidirectional performance prediction technique was developed. This method not only calculates thrust according to rotor specifications but also derives three optimal combinations of dimensions (D, H) for a target thrust, taking installation space constraints into account. A GUI-based design support program implementing this technique has been made publicly available (smartship.tu.ac.kr). The results of this study are expected to contribute to securing technical competitiveness in CII compliance and environmentally sustainable ship retrofits by facilitating the swift determination of thrust and optimal rotor specifications without the need for high-cost numerical analysis or extensive technical resources.
