Asymmetric Load Compensation and Optimal Arrangement for Hydrogen Fuel Cell-based Electrification Design of Small-to-Medium Oceanographic Research Vessels
To address ICES CRR(International Council for the Exploration of the Sea Cooperative Research Report) 209 and practical carbon-reduction goals, this study validates the spatial optimization and mechanical feasibility of replacing a 336 GT mechanical-propulsion baseline ship with a hydrogen fuel cell hybrid system. By applying affinity laws to lower the speed to 12 kn and establishing a Hub-and-Spoke mission profile, the daily hydrogen requirement was optimized to 397 kg, accommodating a single 20 ft (381 bar) storage module. To comply with IGF Code safety distances, a 15 ton hydrogen module was positioned off-center on the forward portside, and the resulting stability issues were resolved through an Asymmetric Load Compensation method. Weight-moment analysis confirmed a TCG of +0.009 m (Zero-Heel) without additional solid ballast and restricted the VCG rise to 0.172 m, ensuring vessel stability. These results verify the mechanical feasibility of hydrogen-hybrid replacement newbuilding within the constraints of existing vessel dimensions, serving as a crucial bridge technology toward future zero-emission maritime operations.
