Emotional and Behavioral Problems and Excessive Smartphone Use in Young Children : Differences by Gender, Age, and Temperament
This study aims to identify the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among young children and excessive smartphone use, and to analyze differences based on gender, age, and temperament. The standardized Korean Emotional and Behavioral Inventory for Children (K-EBIC-P) was administered to parents of 801 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years enrolled in daycare centers in Gyeonggi Province. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and post-hoc tests. Analysis revealed relatively high rates in the borderline group for peer interaction problems (10.9%), anxiety/withdrawal (9.3%), and excessive smartphone use (8.2%). By gender, boys scored significantly higher in most domains except anxiety/withdrawal.By age, differences emerged in hyperactivity/impulsivity, aggression/conduct, and stereotypy/persistence, with 5-year-olds showing the highest aggression/conduct levels. Furthermore, significant differences were observed across all emotional and behavioral subdomains based on temperament levels. These findings suggest the need for tailored support systems that consider gender, age, and temperament characteristics in interventions addressing emotional and behavioral problems and excessive smartphone use in young children.
