A Narrative Inquiry into the Lives of Mothers Abused by Their Adolescent Children
The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of mothers who are subjected to violence by their adolescent children and to reveal the essential meanings embedded in those experiences. A narrative inquiry methodology was employed, and two mothers who had experienced violence from their adolescent children were selected as research participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The analysis was conducted within the three-dimensional narrative inquiry space proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000). The analysis identified five major themes characterizing the mothers’ experiences: a family shaped by distorted beliefs originating from the family of origin, the inescapable intergenerational transmission of violence, frustration and anger amid the collapse of daily life caused by the child’s violence, attempts to resolve domestic violence through external support, and efforts toward restoring their relationships. Based on the findings, the psychological and social difficulties faced by these mothers were examined, and the meanings of their recovery and growth were discussed in terms of personal, practical, and social justification. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are also provided.
