This study aims to the mediating effect of loneliness in the relationship between youth's relative deprivation and despair generated by unprecedented socio-structural issues, whilst exploring the moderated mediating effect of mental well-being. An analysis was conducted on 515 youth nationwide for this purpose. The results of the analysis showed that, First, youth's relative deprivation was found to have a significant effect on loneliness and despair. Seconds, loneliness had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between youth's relative deprivation and despair. Thirds, mental well-being was a moderated mediator in the relationship between youth's relative deprivation, loneliness, and despair. Based on the above findings, we have examined the risk and protective factors along the pathways leading Korean youth to despair. Mental health programmes should be developed according to the components of mental well-being proposed. Finally, we have made suggestions for future studies.
