This study explores the design and effects of the 2D game Four Footsteps for improving awareness of abandoned animals. In Korea, over 100,000 animals are abandoned annually, primarily due to caregivers lack of responsibility (65.8%), and the limitations of information-based education prompted the development of an experiential game. The game induces empathy through a perspective-taking mechanism— shifting from perpetrator (human) to victim (cat)—and quantifies player choices via a Responsibility Index system that determines two different endings. A pilot test with 20 participants showed statistically significant short-term increases in awareness of abandoned animals (+7.8%, p<.05), empathy (+6.9%, p<.05), and behavioral intention (+19.7%, p<.001). Despite limitations of a small sample and single-group pre-post design, the findings suggest the potential effectiveness of the perspective-taking mechanism and provide foundational data for future randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
