Player Experience and Minor-Key Narrative: A Topic Modeling Study of the Binding of Isaac
This study analyzes how <The Binding of Isaac> modernizes a biblical motif to overcome the limitations of traditional Christian games. Using Francis Schaeffer’s "Minor-Key Theme" and BERTopic analysis of Steam reviews, we empirically investigated player reception. Results show the game uses pessimistic realities— like religious fanaticism and child abuse—as its core narrative engine. Players actively embrace these extreme elements, reconstructing religious meanings like God and sin through procedural experiences of pain and failure. Thus, Christian meta-narratives can be successfully modernized in games through procedural experiences and minor-key emotions rather than direct doctrinal instruction.
