Gaming Relationship Satisfaction and Differential Development of Social Trust: A Latent Growth Model of the Middle Value Paradox
This study examined how in-game relationship need fulfillment differentially affects adolescents' social trust. Using four-wave data from 634 Korean adolescents (2021–2024) and latent growth modeling, we found a "middle value paradox": the Middle group (60.4%) showed significant declines in both abstract and situational trust, while extreme groups remained stable. Abstract trust exhibited complete rank reversal, whereas situational trust showed partial convergence. Integrating construal level, social comparison, and expectation-confirmation theories, we propose that moderate relationship experiences trigger bidirectional comparison stress and expectation-reality discrepancies.
