The Impact of Locus of Control, Perceived Social Norms, and Low Self-Esteem on Destructive Gaming Behavior
This study examines how locus of control, perceived social norms, and self-esteem influence destructive gaming behavior in team-based online competitive games. Survey data were collected from 435 League of Legends players and analyzed using stepwise multiple regression and ANOVA. Results show that chance and powerful-others locus of control and low self-esteem increase destructive behavior, whereas perceived social norms exert a significant inhibitory effect. Internal locus of control lost significance in the final model, suggesting shared variance or suppression effects with low self-esteem. Interaction analyses further reveal that strong social norms mitigate risk even among high-risk players. Implications for fair-play design and community governance are discussed.
