An Analysis of Motivational Induction and Internalization Mechanisms in a Suicide Prevention Serious Game: Focusing on the Narrative of 30 Days
This study examined how the narrative structure of the suicide prevention serious game 30 Days satisfies players’ basic psychological needs and internalizes its functional message. A three-stage framework integrating Bruner’s Narrative Construction Theory, Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and the TEBOTS model was applied. The findings showed that the game’s multi-ending and choice-based narrative satisfied autonomy needs, while the gradual integration of fragmented clues enhanced competence needs and emotional bonds with realistic characters fulfilled relatedness needs. The study identified this process as a key mechanism for internalizing suicide prevention messages and suggested practical guidelines for public-interest serious game design.
