Exploring the Applicability of a Generative AI-Based Education Program for Applied Music - Focusing on Composition Majors -
This study aimed to explore the technological bottlenecks and psychological attitudes experienced by applied music composition majors amid the changing music production environment driven by the spread of generative AI, and to examine the applicability of a generative AI collaborative education program designed in response to these findings. The study was conducted with seven undergraduate composition majors at the Department of Applied Music at D University, following a sequence of pre-diagnosis, program implementation, and post-measurement, with Likert-scale surveys and in-depth interviews (IDI) administered concurrently. The educational program was based on the ADDIE instructional design model and comprised three modules ethics and — copyright literacy, music generation AI integrated with DAW-based production, and branding using image generation AI—with Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) creative principles applied throughout. Following program participation, mean scores showed an upward trend in participants' interest in generative AI, confidence in using music and image generation AI tools, and career preparation awareness, while mean scores related to anxiety about creative domain infringement and job threats decreased. In contrast, changes in confidence regarding AI-assisted mixing and mastering were comparatively limited, and concerns about ethics and copyright showed a slight increase, with differential patterns of change observed across domains. This study is a small-scale, single-group pilot case study and therefore has inherent limitations in the generalizability of its findings and in causal interpretation. The significance of this study lies in providing foundational data for designing applied music education that utilizes generative AI as a human-led creative tool.
