A Study on Developing Generative Capacity in Applied Music Performance Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence - From the Perspectives of Moravec's Paradox and Embodied Cognition -
This study argues for reorienting practical music education from reproduction-centered training toward the development of uniquely human generative capacity at a turning point when generative AI has accelerated musical creation and reproduction, and proposes concrete directions for practice. Such capacity refers to the musical performance whose value remains distinctively human even after reproduction is automated—manifested in real-time improvisation, interactive listening, and embodied performance. Combining literature review and institutional case analysis, the study cross-examines Moravec's paradox and the concept of altriciality, and analyzes the 2027 admission reforms of a Seoul-area arts university alongside the responses of Juilliard, Berklee, and the Recording Academy. The findings show that sensorimotor abilities easy for humans are hardest for AI, and that humans' immature birth yields high plasticity and embodied intelligence. This capacity comprises embodied tacit knowledge, real-time situational response, social interaction, and creative authorship, converging in improvisation, while institutional responses likewise shift assessment toward unforgeable real-time performance and authorship. Moravec's paradox is taken not as a predictive law but as a heuristic distinguishing reproduction from generation. The study proposes a curricular redesign centered on systematized solo-making, staged improvisation, ensemble interaction, failure-tolerant assessment, and complementary AI literacy, leaving empirical verification to future work.
