A Study on the Competitiveness of Unscripted Television Formats - Focusing on The Masked Singer -
This study aims to identify the core components that underpin the competitiveness of The Masked Singerformat and to analyze how these components have been adopted and adapted across different national versions. The study examines the United States, Germany, and China, all of which have adopted The Masked Singerformat. Four core components were identified through a review of seven previous studies on The Masked Singer, and the patterns of acceptance and adaptation in each country were analyzed based on these components. The results are as follows. First, fairness, musicality, entertainment, and immersion were identified as the four core components of The Masked Singerformat. Second, these four components retained their fundamental characteristics across the versions in the United States, Germany, and China, while peripheral elements, including participant composition, judging methods, stage production, and presentation style, varied according to each country's culture and broadcasting environment. These findings highlight the importance of developing differentiated broadcasting formats that can sustain viewer interest and participation in an increasingly competitive broadcasting environment shaped by the expansion of digital platforms and OTT services. This study contributes by identifying fairness, musicality, entertainment, and immersion as the core components underpinning the competitiveness of The Masked Singerformat and by comparing how these components were accepted and adapted across different countries. In doing so, it provides a foundation for the future development of unscripted television formats and the enhancement of their competitiveness by Korean broadcasters.
