본 연구는 2024년 브로드웨이에서 개막한 뮤지컬 『위대한 개츠비』를 대상으로 짧은 시간에 많은 단어를 빠르게 쏟아내는 가창 형식인 패터(patter)가 단순한 희극적 가창 장치를 넘어 수행 하는 극적 기능을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 패터의 개념과 계보, 뮤지컬 넘버의 극적 기능에 관한 선행연구를 검토한 후, 패터의 고전적·현대적 정의 등을 조작화한 세 가지 판정 기준을 설 정하였다. 이를 바탕으로 작품 전체 25곡 가운데 5곡을 패터 계열 넘버로 판별하고 이들 넘버의 가사를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 이 작품의 패터는 네 가지 극적 기능을 수행하는 것으로 나타났 다. 첫째, 소문의 내용과 그것이 퍼져 나가는 방식을 재현하며 극의 핵심 정보를 압축적으로 전달 한다. 둘째, 대사에 준하는 발화 속도를 유지함으로써 장면의 흐름을 지속하면서 사건에 대한 관 찰자의 실시간 반응을 노래하게 한다. 셋째, 열거와 가속, 각운의 연쇄라는 발화 방식을 통해 불 안한 인물의 심리를 형상화한다. 넷째, 말이 중심이 되는 사건인 설전을 가창으로 조직하여 갈등 과 사건을 진전시킨다. 이러한 결과는 패터가 '서사의 시간'과 '서정의 시간'의 접점에서 작동하 며, 가창이 시작된 뒤에도 정보와 사건의 흐름을 지속시키는 역할을 수행함을 보여준다. 본 연구 는 패터를 고전적 패터송이라는 고정된 장르가 아니라 현대 뮤지컬에서 장면의 진행 원리로 활용 되는 관용구로 파악하고 그 극적 기능과 작사·작곡상의 활용 가능성을 구체화하였다는 데 의의가 있다.

This study examines the dramatic functions that patter performs in The Great Gatsby: A New Musical, which opened on Broadway in 2024. Patter delivers many words in a short span of time through rapid singing, and has conventionally been treated as a comic device rather than as a dramaturgical resource. After reviewing prior research on patter and on the dramatic functions of musical numbers, the study establishes three criteria operationalizing the classic and contemporary definitions of patter, classifies five of the show's twenty-five numbers as patter-based, and analyzes their lyrics. The analysis identifies four dramatic functions. First, patter compresses core narrative information, reproducing both the content of rumors and the way they spread. Second, its speech-like delivery allows an observer to voice real-time reactions in song without halting the scene. Third, through enumeration, acceleration, and chains of rhyme, patter embodies a character's anxiety in the manner of utterance itself. Fourth, because a verbal duel is an event made of words, patter organizes it into song and thereby advances the conflict and the plot. These findings show that patter operates at the junction of "book time" and "lyric time," sustaining the flow of information and events after singing begins. The study's contribution lies in reframing patter not as a fixed genre but as an idiom for advancing scenes in contemporary musicals, and in specifying its dramatic functions and practical applications for lyric writing and composition.
