A Study on Ambivalent Sexism in The Phantom of the Opera - Focusing on Phantom and Raoul -
The purpose of this study is to analyze ambivalent sexism in the ways the Phantom and Raoul express love in the musical The Phantom of the Opera. The study examined seven songs sung by the two characters to Christine, applying Glick and Fiske’s (1996) three domains of ambivalent sexism paternalism, gender differentiation, and heterosexuality. First, in paternalism, the Phantom’s protection and admiration shifted to control and intimidation, while Raoul restricted Christine’s choices in the name of protection. Second, in gender differentiation, the Phantom regarded Christine as an object for his artistic fulfillment, while Raoul idealized her sensitivity and purity. Third, in heterosexuality, the Phantom showed emotional dependence, jealousy, and possessiveness, while Raoul prioritized their relationship over Christine’s choices. In summary, although the Phantom and Raoul demonstrate obsessive and devoted love, respectively, both exhibit ambivalent sexism by prioritizing their own judgments and standards. This study is significant in demonstrating, through the same analytical criteria, that ambivalent sexism is embedded in both characters despite their contrasting ways of love.
