Snare wires significantly influence the brightness, metallic timbre, resonance, and sust ain of a snare drum. This study examined timbral and relative sound level changes according to snare wire count by reducing a standard 20-strand snare wire in two-strand increments to the No Wire condition. A drum pedal-based “Stick Striker” ensured consistent striking conditions, and recorded samples were analyzed using Waveform, PAZ Analyzer, Spectrogram, and 3D Waterfall analyses for peak level, frequency distribution, resonance, and sustain. The results showed little difference in the main low-frequency peak around 210 Hz, while clear differences appeared in the distribution and decay of mid- and high-frequency compone nts above 500 Hz. As snare wire count decreased, these components generally became less pers istent, although a limited snare-wire response remained with two strands. In the No Wire condition, metallic components decreased, while low-frequency resonances from the drumhead s and shell became more prominent. These findings indicate that snare wire count primarily affects timbral brightness, metallic quality, resonance, and sustain rather than overall sound level. This study provides fundamental data for understanding timbral changes caused by snare wire reduction or damage and for practical applications in performance, recording, and sample production.
