This study aimed to quantitatively classify vegetation types in forest wetlands of the Gangwon region and to provide foundational data for conservation and management strategy development through systematic comparison and analysis of ecological characteristics by vegetation type. ISOPAM cluster analysis was applied to phytosociological vegetation survey data collected from 282 sites, and the ecological characteristics of each vegetation type were examined based on elevation, moisture conditions, stratal structure, importance values of constituent species, total cover, life-form composition, species diversity indices, and indicator species. The classification results revealed that forest wetland vegetation in the Gangwon region was broadly divided into two community groups: a lowland moist and transitional vegetation type and a highland montane deciduous broad-leaved forest type. At the subordinate level, a total of six vegetation types were distinguished: the Phragmites japonica community type, the Salix koreensis–Persicaria thunbergii community type, the Acer ginnala–Zanthoxylum schinifolium community type, the Alnus japonica–Molinia japonica community type, the Fraxinus mandshurica–Carex dispalata community type, and the Fraxinus rhynchophylla community type. Vegetation structure and stratal development varied markedly along gradients of elevation and moisture conditions, indicating that the successional trajectory of forest wetlands is governed by site environmental conditions. Dominant species analysis showed that Salix spp. recorded the highest mean importance value (MIV) of 26.9%, with Alnus japonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Fraxinus mandshurica and Acer ginnala identified as major dominant species. Analyses of species diversity indices, life-form composition, and indicator species further confirmed distinct ecological differences among vegetation types. These findings are expected to serve as scientific baseline data for the development of tailored conservation and restoration policies for forest wetland vegetation types in the Gangwon region.
