Analysis of Height and Diameter at Breast Height Relationships and Shape Ratios of Pinus densiflora across Geographic Regions
Pinus densiflora is a representative tree species widely distributed across Korean forests, and forest management strategies that consider regional environmental characteristics are required. This study aimed to analyze the height-diameter at breast height (DBH) relationship and the ratio of height to diameter at breast height (H/D ratio) of P. densiflora based on the forest ecoprovince classification system and to provide implications for ecoprovince-specific stand management. Dominant and co-dominant trees from 1,054 permanent sample plots of P. densiflora forests in the 7th National Forest Inventory were used, comprising a total of 18,645 trees. Five allometric equations were applied to select the best-fitting height–DBH model for each ecoprovince. Comparisons among the best-fitting models showed statistically significant differences in 7 of the 10 pairwise comparisons among ecoprovinces. In particular, the Coastal ecoprovince differed significantly from all other ecoprovinces. The H/D ratio did not differ significantly among ecoprovinces; however, in all ecoprovinces, trees with DBH of approximately 6–17cm showed H/D ratios exceeding 70%. This indicates that stand density management is required in this DBH range to improve structural stability. These findings confirm differences in the height–DBH relationship of P. densiflora among ecoprovinces and identify the DBH range requiring stand density management based on H/D ratio analysis. Therefore, this study can provide fundamental information for developing ecoprovince-based forest management strategies.
