Comparison of Nitrogen Release Characteristics of Carbonized Material from Agricultural and Livestock Biomass
This study was conducted to compare the chemical structural characteristics and nitrogen release properties of carbonized materials derived from different feedstocks. The carbonized materials used in this experiment were produced by pyrolyzing chicken manure, sesame stalk, and peach pruning branches at 400℃ for 2 h, and were designated as chicken manure carbonized material (CMC), sesame stalk carbonized material (SSC), and peach pruning branch carbonized material (PBC), respectively. FTIR analysis was performed to identify surface functional groups, and nitrogen release characteristics were evaluated by adding 50 mL of distilled water to 0.5 g of carbonized material and shaking the mixture at 160 rpm for up to 48 h. FTIR spectra showed peaks corresponding to aliphatic C–H (2920 cm-1) and aromatic C=C (1600 cm-1) bonds in all treatments. Aromatic carbon structures were more pronounced in the plant-derived materials, whereas a broad peak at 1000–1100 cm-1 was observed in CMC, indicating the influence of oxygen-containing functional groups and inorganic components. Nitrogen release increased gradually over time and did not reach equilibrium within 48 h. The nitrogen release followed the order CMC > SSC > PBC, with values of 8.00, 0.25, and 0.15 mg g-1 after 48 h, respectively. These results suggest that nitrogen supply characteristics of carbonized materials are strongly influenced by feedstock and carbon structure formed during pyrolysis.
