A Systematic Review of Assistive Technology Applications in Elite Para Sports
Objective : This study systematically reviewed domestic and international studies on assistive technology (AT) in elite para sports, analyzing its status, types, effects, and outcome measures to provide basic data for evidence-based AT services. Methods : Studies published between March 2015 and February 2026 were searched in Web of Science, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and RISS. Following the PRISMA flow chart, 14 of 372 records were included. Methodological quality was appraised using the MMAT version 2018, and the applied AT was cross-classified by the criteria of Cook and Polgar (2014). Results : Eight studies were quantitative descriptive, four mixed methods, and two qualitative; Brazil (n = 4) contributed the most, and eight were rated as high quality. Participants mainly had limb amputation (33.0%) or spinal cord injury (23.0%); wheelchair rugby (22.6%) and para badminton (17.7%) were the most frequent sports. Twenty AT types were applied 34 times: 64.7% low-tech, 44.1% commercial, and 41.2% adaptive. AT improved athletic performance, postural stability, and psychosocial well-being, whereas satisfaction with service provision was low; QUEST 2.0 (28.6%) and ATD-PA (19.0%) were most used. Conclusions : Owing to cost and accessibility constraints, low-tech commercial and adaptive devices predominated, verified mainly through subjective satisfaction. AT professionals should provide individually customized interventions and continuous follow-up based on the Matching Person and Technology model, and further research employing objective performance indicators across diverse disabilities and sports is warranted.
