Innovation Strategy Profiles and Firm Performance in Technology-Intensive Manufacturing: A 3-Step Latent Profile Analysis
This study identifies innovation strategy profiles, their determinants, and performance differences in technology-intensive manufacturing firms. Using data from 2,506 firms drawn from the 2024 Korea Innovation Survey (KIS), we conducted Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), three-step Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), and hierarchical regression. Three latent profiles emerged: the Strategic Integration type (36.2%), the Internal Consolidation type (19.7%), and the Innovation Passive type (44.1%). The proportion of personnel with a Master's degree or higher and the diversity of government support utilization emerged as critical differentiators between the Strategic Integration and Internal Consolidation types. After controlling for structural factors such as firm size and industry, the Strategic Integration type showed consistent and significant advantages across all four performance indicators— market-first innovation, firm-first innovation, export intensity, and intellectual property protection. In particular, the Internal Consolidation type showed no significant difference from the Innovation Passive type in market-first innovation, but exhibited advantages in firm-first innovation and IP protection, indicating a strategic position specialized in internal incremental innovation and technology asset accumulation rather than external market leadership. Interaction analysis further revealed that strategic effects on exports were independent of firm size, whereas effects on the other three indicators were synergistically amplified by it. Robustness checks confirmed the consistency of these patterns across both high-technology and medium-high-technology subgroups. This study contributes to ambidextrous organization theory by empirically identifying the Internal Consolidation type as an intermediate strategic position and by demonstrating that ambidexterity unfolds differentially across performance domains. It further offers policy contributions by proposing phased policy modules for ambidextrous advancement in technology-intensive manufacturing firms.
