The Strategic Value of Immaterial ESG Focus During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from U.S. Publicly Listed Firms
Large-scale external shocks may rapidly alter stakeholder expectations and firm-evaluation criteria, thereby changing the strategic significance of ESG issues that were previously considered immaterial under established industry standards. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as the empirical context, this study examines how a firm’s relative focus on immaterial ESG issues is associated with immediate firm-value losses and subsequent recovery. Immaterial ESG focus refers to the extent to which a firm places relatively greater emphasis on ESG issues classified as immaterial, rather than material, under external industry-specific standards. We first analyzed stock-price declines following the COVID-19 outbreak for 1,503 U.S. publicly listed firms. We then examined changes in firm value using a panel dataset of 10,680 firm-year observations for 2,036 firms from 2016 to 2022. The results show that firms with a higher pre-pandemic immaterial ESG focus experienced smaller stock-price declines immediately following the outbreak. Panel regression results further indicate that a greater focus on immaterial ESG issues is positively associated with firm value in the post-COVID-19 period. These findings suggest that ESG issues previously regarded as immaterial may reveal their unexpected strategic value when external shocks reshape stakeholder expectations and firmevaluation criteria.
