Energy Structure Disparity and Oil Price Volatility in the Asymmetric Spillover to Financial Markets: A Comparative Analysis of Korea and the U.S.
This study examines the asymmetric spillover effects of oil volatility index (OVX) shocks on financial markets in Korea and the United States from an international business perspective. Using daily data from January 2010 to December 2024, we employ an asymmetric VARX model with asset-class-specific Wald tests to identify differential market responses to OVX increases and decreases. Results reveal that Korea, as an energy-importing nation, exhibits a pronounced downside asymmetric structure, with a 1% OVX increase eliciting an immediate KOSPI decline of −7.77 bp and a VKOSPI surge of +58.68 bp (asymmetry ratio: 4.11). The United States, as an energy-transitioning nation, displays a comparatively balanced pattern with an asymmetry ratio of 2.08. Bai-Perron structural break tests identify three distinct regimes demarcated by the shale revolution (2012) and COVID-19 pandemic (2020), revealing that the United States substantially enhanced its capacity to absorb OVX shocks post-shale, whereas Korea retained its structural vulnerability throughout. These findings establish energy structure heterogeneity as a critical determinant of cross-country variation in financial market asymmetry, with implications for differentiated energy risk management strategies for multinational corporations.
