A Case Study on the Success Factors of VinFast in the Vietnamese Electric Vehicle Market: Focusing on Porter’s Five Forces Model and VinFast’s SPLEG Strategy
This study aims to identify the success factors of VinFast, a local enterprise that has established a dominant competitive advantage in the Vietnamese automotive market. To capture the unique characteristics of emerging markets, the study adopts the ‘Strategy Tripod’ framework—comprising the industry-based view, resource-based view, and institution-based view—as its overarching conceptual lens. Given the nature of the current paradigm shift, this research focuses deeply on Porter's Five Forces analysis to investigate VinFast’s success strategies. Secondary data analysis reveals that government policies influenced the industrial structure characterized by the five competitive forces. In response to these structural conditions, VinFast leveraged its existing resources and capabilities to deploy the ‘SPLEG’ strategy. Specifically, the SPLEG strategy consists of five key dimensions: rapid entry and decision-making (Speed), a well-timed transition to electric vehicles aligned with market trends (Pivot), the strategic deployment of large-scale capital (Leverage), backward vertical integration with charging infrastructure providers (Ecosystem), and expansion into the global market (Globalization).
