Overcoming the Liability of Foreignness and Transferring Knowledge across Subsidiaries: A Longitudinal Case Study of a Korean Automotive Supplier in Slovakia
This study examines how a supplier firm addresses liabilities of foreignness after following an existing customer into a foreign market and how the resulting knowledge transfers across subsidiaries. We draw on a longitudinal single-case study of a Korean automotive parts manufacturer’s Slovak subsidiary, from its establishment in 2004 to the founding of the firm’s Albanian subsidiary in 2018. We find that follow-thecustomer FDI reduced product market uncertainty, but liabilities of foreignness persisted in the local labor market and organizational operations, where the firm’s relationship with its automaker customer provided limited support. Through trial and error, the Slovak subsidiary maintained headquarters’ standards in activities requiring customer coordination and increased local adaptation in socially embedded activities. In this process, it developed standardization-localization allocation knowledge, a higherorder form of knowledge that guides decisions about which activities to standardize and which to localize. This knowledge transferred directly to later subsidiaries through personnel mobility rather than through headquarters, showing how responses to liabilities of foreignness can generate knowledge for balancing standardization and localization across subsidiaries.
