Drawing on Social Value Orientation theory and competing network perspectives, this study examines whether prosocial orientation is associated with two forms of user knowledge contribution, knowledge sharing and knowledge creation, and whether these associations vary with network openness in digital communities. The analysis used survey data collected in 2014 from 189 users of digital communities in South Korea. The results show that prosocial orientation was positively associated with both knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. For knowledge sharing, the interaction between prosocial orientation and network openness was statistically significant but opposite to the hypothesized direction: the positive association between prosocial orientation and knowledge sharing was stronger in low-openness than in high-openness network environments. Network openness did not significantly moderate the relationship between prosocial orientation and knowledge creation. These findings suggest a paradox of network openness. Although open networks may broaden the potential reach of a contribution and facilitate knowledge diffusion, openness did not strengthen the positive association between prosocial orientation and knowledge sharing. By integrating individual value orientation with network context, this study advances a person-context perspective on knowledge contribution and underscores the need to distinguish the informational reach of openness from the relational and motivational conditions surrounding contribution. These arguments may also inform research on voluntary knowledge contribution in cross-border digital communities and globally distributed knowledge networks.
