본 논문은 생성형 AI 시대의 종교시 읽기를 조지 허버트의 시를 중심으로 고 찰하는 것을 목적이다. 생성형 AI가 제시하는 해석적 이해와 종교시가 요구하 는 참여적 읽기를 중심으로 비교·분석하였다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 생성형 AI가 시어와 이미지의 의미를 즉각적으로 제공하는 데 비해, 종교시는 독자가 작품 앞에 머물며 하나님과의 관계를 성찰하는 시간을 요청한다. 둘째, 생성형 AI가 시어와 이미지에 대한 다양한 해석 가능성을 확장하는 데 비해, 종교시는 하나님과 독자 사이의 관계를 중심으로 집중시킨다. 셋째, 생성형 AI의 읽기가 구조를 종합하여 주제를 완결되는 데 비해, 종교시는 독자의 실천을 통해 종교 시 읽기의 의미가 지속된다. 결론적으로 생성형 AI와의 비교는 종교시가 독자 를 하나님과의 관계로 이끌고 그 의미에 응답하도록 하는 ‘살아있는 언어’로서 지니는 고유한 종교적 특수성을 드러낸다.

This study examines the reading of religious poetry in the age of generative AI, focusing on George Herbert’s “Repentance.” It compares the interpretive approaches of generative AI and religious poetry through the concepts of informativeness and relationality. The findings are as follows. First, whereas generative AI provides immediate interpretations of a literary text, religious poetry calls readers to dwell upon the text and take time to reflect on their relationship with God. Second, whereas generative AI expands the range of possible interpretations, religious poetry directs diverse meanings toward God as their ultimate center. Third, whereas AI-based reading reaches completion through the understanding and explanation of meaning, the meaning of religious poetry extends beyond the act of reading through the reader’s response and practice. In conclusion, the comparison with generative AI reveals more clearly the distinctive nature of religious poetry as a living language that draws readers into a relationship with God and invites them to respond to its meaning.
