This paper examines the existential concerns and narratives of salvation in Leo Tolstoy’s A Confession and the Ecclesiastes in the Bible through a comparative reading of the two texts. A Confession records Tolstoy’s existential anxiety and fear of death as he searches for the meaning of life, as well as his ‘conversion’ through which he comes to recognize the meaning of true faith. Although Tolstoy initially seeks the meaning of life through reason, he eventually recognizes its limitations and discovers the possibility of salvation in the faith of the Russian peasantry. In this respect, A Confession resonates with the teachings of Ecclesiastes, which repeatedly reflects on the vanity of human wishes and endeavors, while invoking the Creator who governs life and death. Both texts share a common concern with human finitude and death and begin from these existential questions in their search for the ultimate meaning of life and truth.
