A Study of Liminality and Communitas in the Intermedieval Period of the Old and New Testaments: The Social and Religious Meaning of the Messianic Advent from the Perspective of Rite of Passage Structure
This study analaysed the intertestamental period of the Old and New Testaments as a liminality stage preparing for a redemptive-historical transition, and analyzed the historical context, the emergence of diverse religious communities, and the concept of the great Messianic hope by applying Arnold van Zheunep’s theory of rite of passage, Victor Turner’s concept of liminality, and Paul Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity. Furthermore, it offers a new clarification of the significance of the narrative identity of the intertestamental period and apocalyptic literature within the context of the diaspora. In conclusion, the intertestamental period of the Old and New Testaments can be said to have been a collective rite of passage in preparation for the Messianic age. In particular, by studying the emergence and formation of identity of various communitas such as the Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots, Essenes, and the Qumran community after the Babylonian exile, and understanding the intertestamental period as a process of redemptive-historical liminality, the book reexamines the social and religious significance of the great Messianic anticipation.
