A Study on Kim Mandeok’s Commercial and Relief Practices in the Late Joseon Dynasty and Their Sustainability—by Mapping Them Structurally according to the UN’s SDGs and ESG
This study aims to reconstruct the commercial and relief practices of Kim Mandeok (金萬德), who was active in Jeju in the late eighteenth century, on the basis of historical sources, and structurally compare the social values and functions manifested in those practices with relevant dimensions of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). The study cross-examines Joseon Wangjo Sillok, Seungjeongwon Ilgi, and Ilseongnok, together with Chae Jegong’s Mandeokjeon and Sim Nosung’s Gyeseomjeon, and applies a dual classification framework that separates the historical evidence level (E-Scale) from the mapping level (M-Scale) of correspondence with contemporary sustainability norms. The findings show that Kim’s use of her economic resources for famine relief, in supporting residents in their access to food, demonstrates the strongest functional correspondence with SDG Target 2.1 and the social (S) dimension of ESG. The private resources were combined with the public relief system to mitigate the impact of disaster, and this process shows partial correspondence with SDG Targets 1.5 and 17.17, while the female economic actor’s social contribution transformed into official recognition by the state is more limitedly connected to SDG Target 5.5. For the environmental (E) dimension, there is a lack of sufficient direct historical evidence, while for modern corporate governance (G), which presupposes the modern corporate form, it is judged to be conceptually inapplicable. On this basis, the study proposes the concepts of the “public conversion of private economic resources”and the “historical embodiment of sustainability values.” Although the modern concepts of the SDGs and ESG did not exist in her time, within the historical conditions of her era, Kim’s practices concretely embodied the values that are now being institutionalized through these norms, including access to food, protection of vulnerable groups, social responsibility, publicly oriented resource allocation, and cooperation. This interpretation avoids the presentist projection of contemporary norms onto the past while demonstrating that historically Korea had certain experience that contains a practical foundation, which can help connect with universal sustainability values.
