Service Industry Workers’ Emotional Labor and Burnout : A Comparative Study of Research Trends
This study compares the trends in research in South Korea, the United States, and Japan regarding the emotional labor and burnout of service industry workers, focusing on the literature published from 2019 to 2025. Using a narrative comparative review, the study examines recent country-specific research and public reports in terms of key job demands, protective resources, outcomes, and policy implications through the perspectives of Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) and Conservation of Resources (COR). Across the three countries, emotional demands, verbal or physical aggression by customers, patients, or other third parties, excessive workload, and insufficient opportunities for recovery are repeatedly associated with burnout and related psychological difficulties. In contrast, adequate staffing, more control over work and schedules, supportive leadership, organizational protection systems, and sufficient rest and recovery can function as job resources that may buffer these risks. Surface acting is comparatively consistently associated with emotional dissonance and poorer wellbeing, whereas the effects of deep acting depend more on context. Compassion satisfaction is particularly relevant to occupations in the care-oriented service sector. Thus, caution is required when applying it to all service industries. The research in U.S. increasingly frames burnout in relation to staffing, work design, electronic documentation, digital workflow, and recovery conditions. The research in Japan, meanwhile, emphasizes workplace violence, bullying, workload, reduced sleep, and pandemic-related psychological distress, particularly in health and care settings. The research in Korea, on the other hand, highlights customers’ harassment and third-party violence, workplace protection systems, sleep disturbance, productivity loss, and the revision and validation of culturally grounded emotional-labor measures. Taken together, these findings support an organizational and occupational-health perspective in which emotional labor and burnout are shaped by the interaction between individual regulation strategies and working conditions. Future research should expand longitudinal and quasi-experimental designs, improving cross-national measurement equivalence, and extending comparative analysis beyond health care to a wider range of service industries.
