Contemporary debates on private tutoring in South Korea are marked by persistent normative instability. While discussions adopt both the language of the right and that of the good, their justificatory frameworks are rarely coordinated and instead tend to slide into one another, collide asymmetrically, or operate in isolation. This paper argues that such normative slippage produces an unstable structure of justification, in which competing evaluations of private tutoring are organised according to the internal logic of particular discourses rather than shared criteria. By critically examining three dominant patterns in private tutoring debates – right-centred critiques, the functional translation of the good, and affirmative defences of the good – the analysis shows how each fails to establish a mediating framework capable of addressing tensions between divergent normative claims. As an alternative, I sketch a reconstructive framework drawing on Axel Honneth’s methodology of normative reconstruction. Rather than privileging either the right or the good, this approach aims to illuminate possible justificatory frameworks through which conflicting claims can be rendered mutually intelligible and normatively accountable within contemporary educational discourse.
