본 연구는 엘리엇의 『네 사중주』의 ｢이스트 코우커｣에 나타난 인간- 비인간(신)관계를 캐런 바라드의 인트라액션 개념으로 접근하여 환경적, 사회적으로 불확실성이 증대되는 현시대에 인간-비인간 관계의 윤리성과 비인간세계에 대한 인류의 인식변화 가능성을 생태비평적으로 규명 하려는 시도이다. 인류세 문제와 코로나바이러스와 같이 불확실성이 증가하는 현실에서 인간과 비인간세계와의 관계성은 저해되고 있다. 엘리엇의 작품에 나타난, 탈인간중심적인 관점과 관계를 형성할 때 인간의 태도, 그리고 그의 관계 형성에 대한 윤리관을 물성 생태비평의 이론으로 접근한다면, 관계 형성에 대한 새로운 관점을 실천적으로 제시할 수 있다. 본 연구는 먼저 바라드의 인트라액션 개념으로 미시세계의 미립자 수준의 운동 법칙과 기독교의 성육화의 역설적 상태와의 유사성을 중점적으로 다룬다. 다음으로 작품 속에 나타난 겸양의 지혜가 인간과 비인간의 관계에서 어떻게 필요한지 탐색한다. 마지막으로 『바가바드기타』의 교훈을 중심으로 엘리엇의 관계 형성의 윤리를 규명하여 이를 바라드의 인트라액션의 윤리성과 비교한다. 엘리엇의 작품에 대한 관계중심의 생태비평적 함의는 불확실성으로 혼란의 시대에 살고 있는 사람들에게 관계 형성에 대한 함의를 제시할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

The objective of this study is to figure out ecocritical implications which can help people recognize ethics of human-nonhuman relationships and alternative perspectives for the nonhuman world in Eliot’s “East Coker” with Karen Barad’s intra-action. In the era of escalating uncertainty with anthropocene issues and the corona virus pandemic, the relationships between human and nonhuman are not encouraged due to safety issues. This study explores the non-anthropocentric perspectives in “East Coker” with the understanding that the second section of Four Quartets can be an encouragement for the pursuit of a human-nonhuman relationship. First, this study examines the similarities between quantum physics and the ideas involved in paradoxical Anglo-catholic’s Incarnation. Then, it explores how necessary “the wisdom of humility” in “East Coker” is in terms of human-nonhuman relationships. Lastly, it compares Barad’s ethics of intra-action to Eliot’s from the perspective of the main theme of Bhagavadgita, emphasizing acting without fear. The ecocritical implications in the relation-oriented perspectives in Eliot’s poem can suggest the importance of behavioral changes for pursuing relationships with the non-human world in this era of uncertainty.
