Chinese university internationalization is confronted with opportunities and challenges in the aftermath of the 2008 Financial Crisis. This study discusses the opportunities faced by China’s university internationalization after the 2008 Financial Crisis, such as the opportunities to attract more international students, increase student and faculty exchanges, redesign curriculums, and encourage cooperation between Chinese universities and top foreign universities. This study analyzes some of the challenges of Chinese universities such as how to enroll more international students and recruit more top-level global talent.
The toxicity of materials derived from dried fruit of Cnidium monnieri against early third instar larvae of Culex pipiens pallens was examined using direct contact mortality bioassay. Results were compared with those of currently used mosquito larvicide, temephos. The bioactive principle was identified as xanthotoxol by spectroscopic analysis. As judged by 24 h LD50 value, xanthotoxol was highly effective (4.40 ppm), although this compound was less toxic than temephos (0.16 ppm). C. monnieri fruit-derived materials, particularly xanthotoxol, merit further study as potential mosquito larvicides for protection from humans and domestic animals from vector-borne diseases and nuisance caused by mosquitoes.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) herbage were harvested, ensiled into laboratory silos and opened after 1,2,3,7,10,15 and 35 d of storage. The pH and nitrogen distribution were detected in all ensiling stages. The results showed that red clover silage have significant lower pH than alfalfa silage at every stage of ensiling. The non-protein N (NPN) concentration of these two forages kept increasing along with the ensiling processing and red clover silage has significant lower accumulation of NPN than alfalfa throughout the whole fermentation. Similar trends were displayed in the concentrations of ammonia N (NH₃-N) and free amino acid N (FAA-N). Peptide-N exhibited rapid increase at the first few days, followed by decline and then increased again.
Sorghum-Sudan grass which is an annual forage grass in Gramineae have been bred for biomass promotion. The recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations were derived from the F2:3 genetic mapping population of Sorghum 314A×zongke Sudan grass. The breeding selection based on agronomic characters and DNA molecular marker statistical analysis was carried among the progenies of the RIL populations, and 9 recombinant breeding progenies were determined as heterobeltiosis with high yield. According to DNA diversity analysis of simple sequence of repeats(SSR) marker, the genetic varieties were abundant among the families, and the recombinant breeds of high yield were distributed among the different RIL populations.2 family lines, which have similar agronomic characters and yield, and whose genetic distance nearly equal to zero, showed difference on arid tolerance. 4 breeding lines were selected on agronomic characters and resistance in the field trials, and 2 breed lines were qualified for the regional testing.
39 accessions of sickle alfalfa (Medicago falcata L.) collected from different regions of China were evaluated for their tolerance to drought. Differences were observed among accessions in their reactions to drought and 8 good tolerant accessions at populations level and 18 excellent tolerant accessions at individual level were identified based on drought response index (DRI).
Ondol is the unique traditional heating system of Korea, which is excellent in thermal comfort. Whereas it has several merits as a wet construction method, its work process is complicated and disadvantageous in protecting noise and has concrete heat storage layer. So it is necessary to develop a new material to cover these demerits.
In this research the material that can resolve the problems of construction and noise prevention while keeping heating function of existing wet floor structure has been developed through manufacturing artificial wooden floor panel utilizing waste tires. The developing tendency of existing floor structure companies was studied for experimental contents, and through testing of manufactured materials' degree of strength of bending and pressure the function and similarity of natural wooden material could be confirmed. These floor structure can be shortened of its construction period through simple method which results in saving construction cost and convenience of maintenance, and especially it can be said that as 70~80% of its material is powder of waste tires, it has excellent function against floor impact noise and it utilizes recycling material more than anything.
It is likely that through more tests and research, the construction method for linking part between panels which hasn't been dealt with in this research will be improved.
To improve water quality of Buji Stream and Shenzhen River, the Bujihe Wastewater Treatment Plant has been reconstructed from the original coagulkation-flocculation sedimentation system into the enhanced hybrid submerged biofilm-activated sludge (EHYBFAS)system developed by the authors. The main design parameters of the EHYBFAS system, process characteristics, operational performance, techno-economic index, and experience in design, construction and operation are described,which set up an example of the municipal wastewater treatment plants using the novel process of EHYBFAS, which has lots of advantages, such as stable and high operational performance with the final effluent quality well meeting 1A-1B standard of GB 18918-2002( Chinese national standard for pollutants of effluent from the MWWTPs), much less footprint of 1ha/(100×103m3/d)) vs 4-5ha/(100×103m3/d), much lower capital and operation costs of 700-800 Yuan(RMB)/(m3/d) and 0.5 Yuan(RMB)/m3 vs 1200-1500 Yuan/(m3/d)and 1.0-1.2 Yuan/m3 and much less sludge production of 0.3g dry solid/g removed BOD5 vs 0.7 g dry solid/removed BOD5 respectively for the MWWTP with AS process.
China has been moving rapidly to improve the use of information technology in elementary and secondary schools, progressing in stages from offering basic computer programming courses to creating networked schools with information technology integrated into the whole curriculum. By 2003, in the developed regions of the country, 70 percent of teachers applied information technology to their classes often. In the Tenth Five Year Plan (2001 - 2005), the Chinese government gave priority to the construction of information technology infrastructure. By 2003 the ratio of elementary school students to computers was 12:1 in the most developed regions and 373:1 in the least developed. At the high school level the range was from 8:1 to 18:1. One goal is to equalize educational opportunities across the geographic regions, which now vary greatly As part of this education improvement initiative, the central government will undertake a number of programs, including an ICT development project in village schools, aimed at improving staff development, school management, and instructional quality and efficiency. According to the new teacher training plan, normal universities will make full use of face-to-face education and distance education to lay the groundwork for improved instructional resources and form an instructional network for village and city teachers. Those regions which have been well equipped with computers and school networks will develop network training and TV training. The purpose of these efforts is to effect modernization in education, meaning the improvement of educational efficiency and effectiveness and the promotion of more learner-centered instruction.
We performed a spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the thermal composite supernova remnant 3C 391 by the Chandra observation. Broad- and narrow-band X-ray images show a southeast-northwest elongated morphology and unveil a highly clumpy structure of the remnant. The spectral analysis for. the small-scale features indicates normal metal abundance and uniform temperature for the interior gas. The properties of the hot gas are largely in agreement with the cloudlet evaporation model as a main mechanism for the 'thermal composite' X-ray appearance, though radiative rim and thermal conduction may also be effective. An unresolved X-ray source, with a power-law spectrum, is observed on the northwest border. The equivalent width images reveal a faint finger-like protrusion in Si and S lines out of the southwest radio border.
