Older adults face a heightened risk of chronic diseases due to physiological changes, functional decline, and dietary imbalances. Although nutrition education can enhance dietary habits, its influence on physical activity is less clear. This study, conducted at the Seongnam Senior Industry Innovation Center in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, assessed the effects of group-based nutrition education on 24 adults aged 65 and older (10 men, and 14 women; mean age 76.08 years). Participants engaged in a 12-week program that focused on hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and nutrition management. Anthropometric measurements, physical activity capacity, and dietary intake were evaluated before and after the intervention. Results showed significant reductions in body weight (p=0.038) and waist circumference (p=0.003), while BMI, body fat, and blood pressure remained unchanged. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass, muscle mass index, and right-hand grip strength decreased. Dietary fiber intake saw a slight increase, while cholesterol intake decreased significantly (p=0.007). Waist circumference decreased in both the groups consuming less than 300 mg and those consuming 300 mg or more of cholesterol. Overall, group-based nutrition education led to improvements in dietary habits and anthropometric outcomes, but did not enhance physical activity levels. Combining nutrition education with structured exercise may be more effective in promoting muscle strength and functional health in older adults.
The present study reports the protective properties of a total methanol extract of B. platyphylla var. japonica against ultraviolet (UV)-C irradiation. Pretreatment of Chinese hamster fibroblast (V79-4) cells with a total methanol extract significantly increased cell survival following 300J/m² of UV-C irradiation. The total methanol extract was further fractionated into 5 fractions: n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, n-butanol and water fractions. Among these fractions, B. platyphylla var. japonica ethylacetate, butanol and water fractions showed significant protective effects against the cellular damage induced by UV-C irradiation. In order to elucidate the mechanism underlying this protective effect, DPPH (Editor note: abbreviations should be spelled out at first use.) radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity were measured. Significant radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities were observed for the ethylacetate fraction. In summary, the present data demonstrate that an extract of B. platyphylla var. japonica has a significant protective effect against UV-C irradiation. The underlying mechanism of this protective effect may involve radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation by the B. platyphylla var. japonica extract.
In the present study a two-mode, separately concurring resonant cavity model is proposed for theoretical interpretation of the 3 minute umbral oscillation. The proposed model has been investigated by calculating the transmission coefficients of the waves propagating through the umbral photosphere (photospheric weak-field cavity) and chromosphere (chromospheric strong-field cavity) into the corona, for 3 different umbral model atmospheres by Staude (1982), Beebe et al. (1982) and Avrett (1981). In computing the transmission coefficients we made use of multi-layer approximation by representing the umbra] atmosphere by a number of separate layers with (1) temperature varying linearly with depth and (2) temperature constant within each layer. The medium is assumed to be compressible, non-viscous, perfectly conducting under gravity. The computed resonant periods, transmission spectra, phase spectra, and kinetic energy density of the waves associated with the oscillations are presented in comparison with the observations and their model dependent characteristics are discussed.
In this paper I argue that the so-called gapless relative clause (GRC) in Korean actually has a syntactic gap, and thus, it is a variant of the externally headed regular gappy RC. I also argue that the surface structure of GRC is derived from the underlying structure where the cause-effect relation required in GRC constructions is fully realized via pragmatically conditioned ellipsis. Thus I suggest that the verbal effect part can be ellipted to the extent that this part is pragmatically recoverable in the presence of the head noun that denotes the same effect. The categorial status of the GRC is further claimed to be CP, which then hosts operator movement in its Spec in a usual way. So there is little anomaly in the RCs known as gapless RCs.
This study focuses on the implications of the acceptability contrast of the locative inversion (LI) and presentational there insertion (PTI) constructions when considering some recent accounts of Extended Projection Principle (EPP) effects (see, among others, Chomsky 1995, 2000, Kim 2002, Lasnik 2001). For this purpose, we use Kim and Lee`s (to appear) acceptability judgment test composed of LI and PTI constructions, which was administered to native English speaking subjects. Results show judgment contrasts and confirm the slightly degraded nature of the LI constructions. In regard to the theoretical importance of the EPP, why perceptions of the contrasts differ is captured through a theoretical analysis.
