River water quality and organisms have a very close relationship with the human living environment and health, so it is very important to ensure and maintain the ecological integrity of the aquatic ecosystem. In that sense, benthic diatoms have relatively little mobility, can explain the effects of long-term exposed pollution sources, and are very suitable indicator organisms for river ecosystem evaluation. Diatom ecologists have been developed various diatom indices to assess water quality and stream ecosystem over the world. However, they so far have insufficient identification of taxa, are strongly regional, and are difficult to apply as they are domestically. Unfortunately, there has not been developed an independent diatom index suitable for the Korean stream. Therefore, management of water quality and aquatic ecosystem suitable for domestic rivers can be made, and development or improvement of comprehensive multivariate diatom index for the integrated assessment of water quality and aquatic ecosystem is urgently needed.

The red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is the one of the most popular pets, and the most commonly traded species in the world. It is designated as an ecosystem disturbance species that has been managed in South Korea. To date, no reports of natural or anthropogenic migration and spreading of T. s. elegans in South Korea are available. In the present study, we estimated the expected route and the movable path of one female T. s. elegans found in Namsan-myun, Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Based on the movable path, the potential destination of the female turtle was estimated to be about 282 m and 468 m away. Therefore, the moving distance of the red-eared slider to the nearest water system will be at least 606 m and at most 792 m. Our results provide the first evidence about the natural migration and spreading of exotic turtles. This study can serve as a basis for the management and countermeasures against the introduced of T. s. elegans and other exotic species in South Korea.

Heavy metals resulted from the increase of human industrial activity are introduced into the environment through rainfall and wastewater, and have harmful effects on inhabitants. In this study, we investigated biological responses such as survival rate, growth rate, emergence rate and sex ratio, and morphological effects of mentum deformity in Chironomus plumosus, an indicator organism to evaluate pollutions on aquatic ecosystem. The survival rate of C. plumosus showed time- and dose-dependent decrease after chromium and copper exposures. Growth rate decreased at 4th day after chromium exposure and significantly reduced at exposure to relatively high concentration (copper 1000 mg L-1) for all exposure times. In addition, we observed that the emergence rate by exposure to copper 1000 mg L-1 was significantly lower than that of the control group. The imbalance of sex ratios showed at relatively low concentrations (chromium 10 and 50 mg L-1) with the high proportion of female and at the relative high concentration (copper 1000 mg L-1) with the high proportion of male. Furthermore, the morphological mentum deformities of C. plumosus observed in the exposed group according to chromium and copper exposure. These results suggest that the heavy metal exposure in environment may influence biosynthetic and morphological stresses of benthic invertebrate C. plumosus, and aquatic midge C. plumosus are potential indicators for toxicity assessment of heavy metals such as chromium and copper.

Analysis of water quality distribution is very important for river water quality management. Recently, various studies have been conducted on the analysis of water quality distribution according to reduction methods of nonpoint pollutant. The objective of this study was to select the probability distributions of water quality constituents (T-N, T-P, COD, SS) according to the farming forms (control, slow release fertilizer, water depth control) during non-storm period in the paddy fields. The field monitoring was conducted monitoring site located in Baeksan-myun, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea during non-storm period from May to September in 2016. Our results showed that there were no differences in water quality among three different farming forms, except for SS of control and water depth control. K-S method was used to analyzed the probability distributions of T-N, T-P, COD and SS concentrations discharged from paddy fields. As a results of the fitness analysis, T-N was not suitable for the normal probability distribution in the slow release fertilizer treatment, and the log-normal probability distribution was not suitable for the T-P in control treatment. The gamma probability distribution showed that T-N and T-P in control and slow release fertilizer treatment were not suitable. The Weibull probability distribution was found to be suitable for all water quality constituents of control, slow release fertilizer, and water depth control treatments. However, our results presented some differences from previous studies. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of pollutants flowing out in difference periods according to various farming types. The result of this study can help to understand the water quality characteristics of the river.

This study was conducted to elucidate microplastics detection of freshwater ecosystems in Geum river. Samples are collected at 6 points in freshwater, 5 points in fishes. Freshwater was sampled 100 L per each points and fish species were Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, Hemibarbus labeo, Pseudogobio esocinus, Zacco platypus, Micropterus salmoides and Cyprinus carpio. FTIR analyis was adopted to identify microplastic types. Extracted microplastics were PES (polyester), PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) in freshwater, and PES, PE, PP, PET, PVC in fishes. Our results were expected to be used basic research information for further study in microplastics of freshwater ecosystems.

Seasonal succession of zooplankton community and species composition was studied from 2003 to 2014 in a deep reservoir, Lake Soyang, in monsoon climate region, Korea. Annual precipitation was concentrated more than 70% between June and September and it showed remarkably that seasonal variation in water quality. Seasonal variation of water quality in Lake Soyang appeared to be more significant than annual variations, and the inflow of turbid water during the summer rainfall was the most important environmental factor. Zooplankton sepecies composition in Lake Soyang showed obvious tendency through two periods (May to June and August to October) every year. Small zooplankton (rotifer; Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra vulgaris) dominated in spring and mesozooplankton such as copepods and crustaceans were dominant in summer and fall. Zooplankton biomass showed the maximum in September after monsoon rainfall, and chlorophyll showed a similar seasonal variation and it showed a high correlation (r=0.45). The increase of zooplankton biomass is considered to be a bottom-up effect due to the increase of primary producers and inflow of nutrients and organic matter from rainfall. In this study, we found that the variation of zooplankton community was affected by rainfall in monsoon climate region and inflow of turbid water was an important environmental factor, which influenced the water quality, zooplankton seasonal succession in Lake Soyang. It was also considered to be influenced by hydrological characteristics of lake and environment of watershed. In conclusion, seasonal succession of zooplankton species composition was the same as the PEG model. But seasonal succession of zooplankton biomass differed not only in the temperate lake but also in the monsoon region.

Recently, quantitative analyses of food web structure based on carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes are widely applied to environmental assessments as well as ecological researches of various ecosystems, particularly rivers and streams. In the present study, we analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of POM (both planktonic and attached forms), zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish collected from 6 sites located at Nakdong River. Samples were collected from upstream areas of 5 weirs (Sangju, Gangjeong- Goryeong, Dalseong, Hapcheon-Changnyeong, and Changnyeong-Haman Weirs) and one downstream area of Hapcheon-Changnyeong Weir in dry season (June) and after rainy season (September). We suggested ranges of their carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and calculated their trophic levels in the food web to compare their temporal and spatial variations. Trophic levels of organisms were relatively higher in Sangju Weir located at upper part of Nakdong River, and decreased thereafter. However, the trophic levels were recovered at the Changnyeong-Haman Weir, the lowest weir in the river. The trophic level calculated by nitrogen stable isotope ratios showed more reliable ranges when they were calculated based on zooplankton than POM used as baseline. The suggested quantitative ecological information of the majority of biological communities in Nakdong River would be helpful to understand the response of river food web to environmental disturbances and can be applied to various further researches regarding the quantitative approaches for the understanding food web structure and function of river ecosystems as well as restoration.

A total of 23 individuals of glass eel (Anguilla japonica) were investigated from two estuarine barrages of the Nakdong River in 2016. It was observed that most individuals migrated through the eastern barrage, compared to the western. Individual numbers differed significantly along the corridor modification of the barrages; for example, the number of individuals was two to three times higher after the modification. These results indicate that modification of fish way and lock gate for has facilitated migration of glass eel, and our study potentially offers the operation strategy of estuarine barrage in order to induce more active migration of glass eel.
