The assessment of wind resources must be carried out to choose wind farm sites adequately. Additionally, input data on surface roughness maps and topographic maps are required to evaluate wind resources, where input data accuracy determines the accuracy of their overall analysis. To estimate this accuracy, we used met-mast data in Jeju and produced the ground roughness value for the Jeju region. To determine these values, an unsupervised classification method using SPOT-5 images was carried out for image classification. The wind resources of the northeastern part of Jeju were predicted, and the ground roughness map of the region was calculated by the WindPRO software. The wind speed of the Pyeongdae region of Jeju from the ground roughness map was calculated using WindPRO as 8.51 m/s. The wind speed calculated using the remote sensing technology presented in this study was 8.69 m/s. To assess the accuracy of the measured WindPro and the remote sensing technology values, we compared these results to the observed values in the Pyeongdae region using met-mast. This comparison shows that remote sensing data are more accurate than the WindPro data. We also found that the ground roughness map calculated in this study is useful for generating an accurate wind resource map of Jeju Island.

The most wind farm development process in Korea still have not been defined since the history of the wind farm development experiences are very short compared to EU and other developed countries. Therefore, most wind farm development company and researchers have a lot of trouble to implement the wind farm development and need a guideline for the process. Establishing the wind farm needs a complex processes such as transportation system, construction conditions, natural environment and wind conditions etc. Specially, for the restricted development area, the social negotiation and legal minds are necessary. In the case, the decision making process of suitable wind farm area using GIS tool is very useful. However, before using GIS technique, we should understand the development processes and the items for surveying tools. Recently, suitability analysis of selecting Onshore Wind Farm has been studied to consider exclusion analysis to solve the limited develop condition problem. This paper proposed the onshore wind farm development process which can suitable to Korea wind farm environment based on European guideline with GIS tool. To estimate the processes, the processes are divided into two parts, the basic design and wind farm planning. Next, the planning stages are classified into five stages in which the factors for each step were considered.

To examine the fluctuations of aerosol number concentration with different size in the boundary layer of marine area during summer season, aerosol particles were assayed in the Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which is located 419 km southwest of Marado, the southernmost island of Korea, from 24 June to 4 July, 2008. The Laser Particle Counter (LPC) was used to measure the size of aerosol particles and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and sounding data were used to analyze the synoptic condition. The distribution of aerosol number concentration had a large variation from bigger particles more than 3 μm in diameter to smaller particles more than 1 μm in diameter with wind direction during precipitation. The aerosol number concentration decreased with increasing temperature. An increase (decrease) of small size of aerosol (0.3∼0.5 μm in diameter) number concentration was induced by convergence (divergence) of the wind fields. The aerosol number concentration of bigger size more than 3 μm in diameter after precipitation was removed as much as 89∼94% compared with aerosol number concentration before precipitation. It is considered that the larger aerosol particles would be more efficient for scavenging at marine boundary layer. In addition, the aerosol number concentration with divergence and convergence could be related with the occurrence and mechanism of aerosol in marine boundary layer.

In this study, we implemented landslide distribution of Jeju Island using ANN and GIS, respectively. To do this, we first get the counter line from 1:2,5000 digital map and use this counter line to make the DEM. for the evaluate the land slide susceptibility. Next, we abstracted slop map and aspect map from the DEM and get the land use map using ISODATA classification method from Landsat 7 images. In the computation processes of landslide analysis, we make the class to the soil map, tree diameter map, Isohyet map, geological map and so on. Finally, we applied the ANN method to the landslide one and calculated its weighted values. GIS results can be calculated by using Acrview program and produced Jeju landslide susceptibility map by usign Weighted Overlay method. Based on our results, we found the relatively weak points of landslide ware concentrated to the top of Halla mountains.

The purpose of this research is to apply GIS(Geographic Information System) for the road simulation and find some benefits analysis for the design processes. The northern Jeju island was selected as a case study. The 1/5,000 digital map and GIS technique were used for optimum road design of the island based on Arc View software. Using this software we can get an overlay map by combination of hill shade map, slope map, aspect map, and building buffer map. Based on the overlay map, we designed the optimum road line and performed three dimensional simulation. From the results, we found that the developed three dimensional road simulation technique using GIS technique that was very useful tool to estimate the reasonable road design before the real road construction works.

To study the intruded phenomena of North Pacific Ocean around Boso peninsular, water property distribution in the adjacent seas to Japan is studied using the hydrographic data obtained by Japan Maritime Agency and Japan Fisheries Agency from 1973 to 1996, The scattering of water type in T-S diagram is relatively small in the Kuroshio Region. Both the envelopes of saline side and of fresh side of the scattered data points shifts gradually from saline side to fresh side as the observation Line moves from southwest to northeast. In mixed water region, the scattering of water type increases rapidly as the observation line moves north; the envelope of fresh cold side moves towards fresh cold side much faster than that of saline side. This suggests that the water does not advect along the salinity minimum layer, but the salinity minimum layer can be understood as a boundary of two different waters aligned vertically. We defined the typical water masses as the Oyashio Water and the Kuroshio Water. The water mass below the salinity minimum layer may be created by isopycnal mixing of these two water masses with a fixed mixing rate. While the water mass above the salinity minimum cannot be created simply by isopycnal mixing. The salinity minimum layer may be eroded from upper side due to active minxing processes in the surface layer, while the water of the salinity minimum layer moves gradually southward. This appears to give an explanation why the thermosteric anomaly value at salinity minimun decereases towards south.

The volume transport and turnover time of the Deukryang Bay, located at the southern area of Korea, were calculated based on the current meter(RCM-7,ACM 16M) data observed at the three gateways of the Bay in May and October of 1996. Dominant tidal current component was calculated through harmonic analysis from raw data to estimate influence tidal current and also residual current was measured by integrating observed data and then averaging on time. Maximum speed of current was about 100㎝/sec during the spring tide at the waterway between Kumdangdo and Kogumdo. The total water volume transports through three entrances of the bay in May and October were 3.9×10^-2 Sv, 3.4×10^-2 Sv(1Sv=10^6㎥s^-1) and turnover time were 0.97day, 1.12day, respectively. Semidiurnal tides were predominant (70∼85%). The water volume transports by residual currents were 2∼4% of total water volume transports. The average fraction of fresh water calculated by tidal prism method using salinity difference between inflow current and outflow current through three entrances in Deukryang Bay was about 0.06% of total volume and the flushing time of fresh water was estimated as 0.97day.

The spatial characteristics of stratification in Deukryang Bay were studied using observed data and analytical models. From the description of the density structure and its the potential energy anomaly (PEA) from observed data along longitudinal direction (from the mouth to head of the bay), we found that the stratification intensity could be changed strongly by density current effect during the spring-neap tidal cycle, and depth variation. To find out density current effect for the formation of the stratification in detail, we implemented a diagnostic approach by using the modified analytical model including density current, tidal current, surface heating and wind stirring. The model allowed for the observed similarities for the whole domain in the bay and increased tidal mixing efficiency value ε up to 0.006 - 0.007 as compared to the results without density current effect. We found that the density current effect was also an important key factor in determining the formation of the spatial distribution of stratification.
