        After harvest, Dolcetto cut roses were immediately exposed to air for 0 (E-0), 1 (E-1), 2 (E-2), and 3 h (E-3) and then placed under tap water for recovery. We determined the effect of air exposure time on vase life, water relations, and gene expression of cut flowers. The results revealed that E-0 treatment exhibits a higher postharvest quality of cut flowers than others. E-3 treatment significantly decreased the vase l ife of c ut r oses d ue t o an early f ailure o f water relations, such as larger stomatal size, higher transpiration, shorter time maintaining positive water balance, and the bacterial proliferation. E-0 treatment significantly decreased water stress, maintained leaf chlorophyll fluorescence ratios, and extended the vase life of cut roses. The decrease in water stress of E-0 treated flowers may increase the expression of Rh-PIP2;1 and Rh-TIP in rose petals, resulting in maintained cell turgor and increased flower diameter of cut flowers. These results recommend that a non-exposed harvest can be used for the harvest s tage to improve the postharvest quality of cut flowers. Understanding the relationship between air exposure time and water relations of cut flowers will significantly help in developing distribution systems for assuring cut roses quality.

        We examined the efficacy of various pretreatment solutions on the postharvest longevity and quality of ‘Hessa’ cut spray roses (Rosa hybrida L.) to develop an inexpensive and innocuous preservative solution for the cut flower industry. Cut flowers were pretreated with 4 preservatives for 10 hours: Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract (SC) at 300 μL·L-1, hydrosol (H), S. baicalensis Georgi extract 300 μL·L-1 + sucrose 1% (SC + Suc), and H + sucrose 1% (H + Suc). The results showed that pretreatment with all the solutions except H + Suc improved the postharvest longevity and extended the longevity of cut rose flowers. We found that 300 μL·L-1 of SC was the most effective preservative, which significantly prolonged the postharvest longevity in cut flowers from 9.7 days (control) to 14.1 days. The beneficial effects of 300 μL·L-1 SC pretreatment were associated with inhibition of bacterial accumulation at the basal portion of cut stems, enhanced water uptake, improved fresh weight, and a positive water balance. SC also effectively maintained chlorophyll fluorescence ratios in the leaves and reduced water stress in cut roses. The results demonstrate the potential of SC as an alternative preservative in the cut rose flower industry.

        Cut roses often have a short vase life due to water stress and ethylene damage under unfavorable postharvest conditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of various pretreatment solutions on the vase life and postharvest quality of the cut rose cultivar ‘Jinny’ (Rosa hybrida L.). Cut roses were pretreated with eight different preservative solutions for 10 hours: aluminum sulfate (AS), Chrysal (CHR), FloraLife (FLR), lysosome (LYS), MS-1 (MS1), MS-2 (MS2), silver n itrate ( SN), a nd s ilver t hiosulfate ( STS). We found that pretreatment with all solutions except LYS prolonged the vase life and improved the postharvest quality of the cut roses. Among these, STS was the most effective pretreatment solution, significantly extending the vase life from 11.8 days (control) to 19.9 days, retaining the initial fresh weight and a positive water balance for longer, and inhibiting microbial growth in the vase. STS also enhanced the water uptake rate, and maintained the high chlorophyll and soluble sucrose contents in the leaves of the cut rose flowers. In addition, we found that MS1 and MS2, which are natural plant extracts, had strong antimicrobial effects and consequently prolonged the vase life of cut roses by more than 4 days compared with the control. Therefore, MS1 and MS2 can be considered as alternative preservatives in the cut flower industry.

        In Baekyang rice fields near the Junam reservoir, 87 of White-naped cranes Grus vipio and 1,010 individuals of White-fronted geese Anser albifrons were observed on average. The number of White-naped cranes and White-fronted geese observed in B site was higher than that in A site where the frequency of disturbances such as vehicles and visitor’s accesses were higher. After the vehicles’ and people’s access were controlled, the number of White-naped cranes used in A site increased significantly, but that of White-fronted geese didn’t increase significantly. We propose that the controls for the vehicles’ and visitor’s accesses to the Baekyang birdwatching facilities in A site from November to March will stably enhance the foraging opportunity of White-naped crane in the Baekyang rice fields. Among the four types of rice fields, Whitenaped cranes and White-fronted geese preferred mostly to forage at the rice fields which were not plowed and straws were removed. White-fronted geese also preferred to forage at the barley cultivated fields. Small number of White-naped cranes choose the rice fields which were not plowed and straws were left with highest density of seeds (308 m2) in rice fields and lowest proportion of Baekyang rice fields. And the two species didn’t forage at the plowed rice fields. We propose to recommend to farmers to leave straws and not to plow in rice fields.

        농촌진흥청 원예특작과학원에서는 수출 및 국내 소비 확대를 위한 황색계 중형 품종을 육성할 목적으로 1995년에 황색계 중 소형종 C. ‘Golden Color’와 순노랑색계 중형종 ‘Eastern Star’ 품종을 교배하여 2008년에 황색계 중, 소형종 ‘프리티 옐로’(Cymbidium ‘Pretty Yellow’) 신품종을 개발하였다. 1995년부터 2007년까지 종자기내파종, 온실양성, 선발 그리고 특성검정으로 균일성, 안정성, 화색, 화수, 엽형 등이 우수하여 2008년 12월 농작물 직무육성 심의회를 거쳐 ‘Pretty Yellow’ 로 명명하였다. ‘Pretty Yellow’ 품종은 연한 오렌지색계 (O25A)의 설판에 연두색 빛이 도는 노랑색계 바탕색(RHS, Y13A)이며, 1개 꽃대에 14개의 소화가 착생하며 화폭이 약 5.9cm이다. 꽃모양은 꽃받침과 꽃잎이 안쪽으로 약간 오므라든 모양의 안아피기형으로 둥글고, 꽃대는 반직립성이며 식물체 크 기는 중소형이다. 꽃은 보통재배 시 1월 중순경부터 개화하는 중, 만생종이며 개화수명은 15-18oC에서 관리시 2개월 정도 유 지된다. 잎 형태는 꼬임이 적은 직립성이고 꽃대의 길이는 41.9cm로 짧은편이며 국내 소비자 기호성이 높다.

        A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar ‘Snow Bowl’ was released by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science(NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), in 2008. The cross was made in 2005 between ‘03B1-230’, breeding lines of NIHHS and ‘Sei-Alps’. Trials were conducted from 2006 to 2008 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading cultures in summer and retarding cultures in spring. The natural flowering time of ‘Snow Bowl’ is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by photo-periodic control. It has single type flowers with white petals. The growth of plant is very vigorous and it is resistant to white rust. The diameter of flower is 6.3cm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 12 and 31, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 59 and its vase life is 24.1 days in autumn season. ‘Snow Bowl’ was applied as No. 2009-179 on February 18, 2009 for variety protection and the plant variety protection rights have been registered as No. 3239 on August 3, 2010 at the Korea Seed and Variety Service

        농촌진흥청 원예특작과학원에서는 2008년에 밝고 강건하며 다화성인 분홍색의 중형품종을 육성할 목적으로 1995년에 밝은 분홍색 중형종 C. Lucky Rainbow ‘Randezvous’ 와 중형종 진분홍색계 Lucky Rainbow ‘Lapin Hot’ 품종을 교배하여 분홍색계 Cymbidium ‘Sky Pink’ 신품종을 개발하였다. 1996년부터 2007년까지 종자기내파종, 온실양성, 선발 그리고 특성검정으로 균일성, 안정성, 화색, 화수, 엽형 등이 우수하여 2008년 12월 농작물 직무육성 심의회를 거쳐 ‘Sky Pink’로 명명하였다. ‘Sky Pink’ 품종은 분홍색계(RHS, RP63C)이며, 1개 꽃대에 11.4개의 소화가 착생하며 화폭이 약 6.3 cm이다. 꽃모양은 꽃받침과 꽃잎이 안쪽으로 약간 오므라드는 둥근 모양이고 꽃대는 반직립성이며 식물체 크기는 중형이다. 꽃은 보통재배시1월 초순경부터 개화하는 중생종이며 잎형태는 꼬임이 적은 반직립성이고 꽃대의 길이는 53.0 cm이었다. ‘Sky Pink’ 품종의 개화 수명은 분화의 경우 약 60일정도이며(18~23℃) 절화할 경우, 18일로 양호하여 분화나 절화품종으로 사용하기에 적합하였다.

        For developing molecular markers linked to white rust resistance in chrysanthemum, RAPD and AFLP were carried out in ‘Puma White’ x ‘Dancer’ mapping population through Bulked Segregant Analysis (BSA) methods. 10 resistant and 10 susceptible individuals were selected and bulked. And then, these bulks were screened using 280 RAPD primers (10 mer) with two parents. As a result of BSA-RAPD, 25 Dancer/R-bulk specific bands in 21 primers and 22 Puma White/S-bulk specific bands in 18 primers were selected. These resistant or susceptible specific bands were screened in 10 resistant and 10 susceptible individuals. Except OPI-13520, all bands were confirmed as false positive. OPI-13520 band presumed as closely linked marker to white rust disease resistance was tested in whole population. Among 187 progenies, just six off-springs did not correspond with phenotypic data. Based on expected phenotypic segregation ratios in the pseudo F1 progenies, it was assumed that a duplex type of white rust resistance in ‘Dancer’ (RRrrrr) were in combination with a duplex type of OPI-13520 marker. As a result of x2-test of independence between resistance gene and OPI-13520 marker, x2 score is 76.08 and probability is 2.13x10-16. And resistance gene and OPI-13520 marker were assumed to be linked in coupling phase. The value of recombination fraction obtained by successive trials and second derivative of log likelihood was 0.03832±0.0271.

        농촌진흥청 원예특작과학원에서는 기호성이 높고 새로운 수요를 창출할 수 있는 녹색계 중소형 품종을 육성할 목적으로1995년에 녹색 화색에 빨간 점무늬가 있는 조생종 중소형종‘A-one’과 중소형종 녹색계 ‘Oji’ 품종을 교배하여 2008년에녹색계 ‘그린허니’(Cymbidium ‘Green Honey’) 신품종을 개발하였다.1995년부터 2007년까지 종자기내파종, 온실양성, 선발 그리고 특성검정으로 균일성, 안정성, 화색, 화수, 엽형 등이 우수하여 2008년 12월 농작물 직무육성 심의회를 거쳐 ‘GreenHoney’로 명명하였다. ‘Green Honey’ 품종은 밝은 연한 녹색계(RHS, G142A)이며, 1개 꽃대에 11.2개의 소화가 착생하며 화폭이 약 6.8 cm로 크지 않다. 꽃모양은 평피기와 안아피기의 중간형으로 윗 꽃받침이 바깥쪽으로 향하는 모양이고,꽃대는 반직립성이며 식물체 크기는 중소형이다.꽃은 보통재배시 11월 중순경부터 개화하는 조생종이며 잎형태는 꼬임이 적은 직립성이고 꽃대의 길이는 51.5 cm로 짧은편이며 내수용 재배에 적합하다.

         A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar, ‘olden Festival’was released by National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea in 2007. It was selected from the progenies of open-pollination of ‘orbay’in 2002. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of ‘olden Festival’is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. The cultivar is semi-double type flowers with bright yellow petals and green flower center. Flower neck and stem are very hardy. The diameter of flower is 56.5 mm. The number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 12.0 and 93.5, respectively. The days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 50 in spring season.

A cross was made in 2002 between ‘elance’ a spray cultivar with red petals and resistant to white rust and ‘eonja’ a spray cultivar with pink petals. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of “herry Blossom”is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. This cultivar is single type flowers with dark pink petals and green flower center and resistant to white rust. It is very stable color of petals when the variety is cultivated under high temperature conditions in summer season. The diameter of flower is 55.0 mm. The number of flowers per stem is 10.5 and the number of petals per flower is 24.0. The days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 45 in spring season.

The natural flowering time of “oon Festival”is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. The cultivar is semidouble type flowers with light-ivory white petals and green flower center. Flower neck and stem are very hardy. The diameter of flower is 67.5 mm. The number of flowers per stem and petals per flower is 11.5 and 100.5, respectively. The days to flowering under the short day is about 54 in autumn season.
